Best Screen-Free Pretend-Play Toys: Wooden Phones, Cameras & Busy Boards (2026)
Toddlers want whatever the grown-ups are holding, and that is usually a phone or a laptop. Analog look-alikes are having a moment: Shopify reported in July 2026 that sales of pretend electronics across its merchants rose 485% year over year and busy board toys rose 220%. These wooden and silicone picks let kids dial, snap, type, scan and unlock with no screen at all.

What to Avoid
- Toys with button or coin cell batteries whose compartment opens without a screwdriver or coin (CPSC says these must be secured)
- Small loose pieces such as play coins, cards or tiny figures for children under 3, or any toy without a clear age label
- Toys with small, loose or easily detached magnets
- Long cords, ribbons or straps on cameras, phones or busy boards left with a child who is not being watched
- Real old phones or remotes handed down as toys, since their battery doors are rarely child-resistant
- "Pretend" phones and tablets with light-up screens, apps or nonstop sound effects that take the pretending out of pretend play
Testing & Certifications to Look For
ASTM F963 / CPSIA tested (US toy safety)EN 71 (European toy safety standard)Clear age grading and a choking-hazard warning on any set with small partsFSC-certified or sustainably sourced wood, where the brand states itScrew-secured battery door on any toy that beeps or lights up
Our Picks
Wooden Pretend Phones & Cameras
Handing over a real phone, or light-up plastic toy phones
A chunky wooden phone and a squishy silicone press phone for the youngest callers, plus two wooden cameras with a kaleidoscope lens and spinning cogs for preschool photographers.
PlanToys My First Phone (12M+, rubberwood, mirror screen); Mushie Phone Press Toy (food-grade silicone); Le Toy Van Retro Camera and Vintage Style Film Camera (3+)
Why we picked it: Toddlers copy what they see adults do, and a phone or camera of their own lets them 'call' grandma or snap the dog with no screen, no apps and no batteries in any of the four toys.

Wooden Pretend Laptop & Cash Registers
Plastic toy laptops and tablets with screens and sound chips
A wooden laptop activity board with rubber keys and a peekaboo mirror for 1-year-olds, then three wooden tills and a full grocery stand with scanners, card readers and play money for shop games.
Melissa & Doug Work & Play Desktop Activity Board (12M+, no loose pieces); Le Toy Van Honeybake Till, Tender Leaf General Stores Till and Melissa & Doug Fresh Mart (3+, play money and small parts)
Why we picked it: Typing on a 'work laptop' and ringing up groceries both build language, counting and turn-taking. The desktop board suits under-3s, while the tills include coins and cards that are 3+ only.

Wooden Busy Boards & Lock Boxes
Plug-in electronic activity cubes and handing over keys
Real latches, hook-and-eye locks, bolts and doors to open, with a surprise picture or animal behind each one. It is the same fiddly fun as a set of keys or a cabinet lock, without the risk.
Melissa & Doug Latches Board, Locks & Latches Board and Latches Barn (3+); Tender Leaf Toys Monster Lock Box (3+, 8 doors)
Why we picked it: Opening latches and locks is hard, repeatable work that keeps busy hands focused for a long stretch and builds the fine motor control that zips, buttons and doorknobs need later.

Pretend-Play Safety Checklist
- Never give a toddler a real old phone, remote or key fob. If a toy holds button or coin cell batteries, the compartment should need a screwdriver or coin to open. If a battery is swallowed, go to the ER right away and call the National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 800-498-8666. CPSC button battery safety →
- Under federal rules, toys meant for children under 3 cannot contain small parts. Follow the age label, and put play coins, cards and figures away when younger siblings are around. CPSC small parts rule →
- Pediatricians advise choosing toys that suit your child's age and abilities and checking toys often for loose or broken pieces. AAP: How to buy safe toys →
- Keep loose magnets out of the house. Swallowing more than one can cause serious internal injury. AAP on magnet dangers →
- Take wrist straps off toy cameras for babies and young toddlers, and save corded or ribboned toys for supervised play.
Why Analog Look-Alikes Are Trending
- Shopify reported that across its merchants, pretend electronics sales rose 485% (June 2026 vs. June 2025) and busy board toys rose 220% year over year, part of a wider shift toward analog, screen-free products. Shopify: Shoppers go analog →
FAQs
At what age do kids start pretend play with phones?
Many toddlers start holding things to their ear and 'talking' between about 12 and 18 months. A simple toy phone with no small parts works well then. Wait for the 3+ label before giving sets with play coins, cards or small figures.
Are toy cash registers safe for toddlers?
Most wooden tills are labeled 3+ because the play coins and cards are small parts. For an under-3, store the coins away and use the till for pushing buttons and opening the drawer, or choose a 12M+ activity board instead.
Do any of these toys use batteries?
The phones, cameras, laptop board, busy boards and wooden tills here are battery-free. Some grocery-stand scanners beep. If a toy uses batteries, check that the battery door is screwed shut, especially if it takes button or coin cells.
Why do toddlers want my phone so much?
They see you using it all day and want to copy you. A look-alike they can carry, drop and chew gives them the same 'grown-up' feeling, and pretending to call someone is great practice for talking.
