PFAS-Free Kids' Gear 2026: Car Seats, Strollers, Mattresses & Rainwear
PFAS ("forever chemicals") have long been used to make kids' gear repel water, stains and spills: car seat and stroller fabrics, mattress covers, waterproof bibs, lunch bags and rainwear. This guide lists gear where the brand publicly says it is made without PFAS, quotes each claim word for word with a link to the page, and explains the state laws that now restrict PFAS in kids' products and clothing.

What to Avoid
- Vague "eco" or "non-toxic" labels with no PFAS wording
- "Stain-resistant" or "water-repellent" finishes with no PFAS claim
- PFAS claims that only cover the outer fabric (check the membrane, finish and zippers too)
- Secondhand car seats with an unknown history

How to Read PFAS Claims on Kids' Gear
These phrases mean different things. Here's what each one tells you.
| What the label says | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Made without intentionally added PFAS" | The brand didn't add PFAS on purpose. This matches the standard most state bans use. |
| "PFAS-free" / "No PFAS" | A broader marketing claim. Check which parts it covers (fabric, membrane, finish, zippers). |
| "PFC-free" | An older term for the same chemical family. Check the details. |
| "Fluorine-free DWR" or a named finish (BIONIC-FINISH ECO, ZELAN R3) | The water-repellent finish is fluorine-free. Other parts may not be covered. |
| "UL Non-Detectable PFAS Validated" | A third-party validation program from UL Solutions, so you're not relying only on the brand's word. |
| "Made with PFAS chemicals" | A required disclosure in some states for expert severe-wet outdoor gear, not everyday kids' rainwear. |

What this means for parents: if you live in one of these states, new kids' gear sold there is increasingly covered, but older inventory, used items and online sellers may not be. A clear brand claim is still the easiest thing to check. General information, not legal or medical advice. This guide summarizes publicly available state laws and brands' own published claims as of November 2026. We haven't lab-tested any products, and PFAS claims are the brands' own statements unless a third-party validation is named. Laws change, so confirm details with the official sources linked. FAQs
Why would PFAS be in a car seat, stroller or bib?
PFAS have been used to make fabrics repel water, stains and spills. That makes car seat covers, stroller canopies, waterproof bibs, mattress covers, lunch bags and rainwear the most common places to look.
What does "made without intentionally added PFAS" mean?
The brand didn't add PFAS on purpose to get a function like water or stain repellency. Trace amounts from the supply chain can still exist, which is why some states also set a total fluorine limit.
Is "PFAS-free" the same as tested PFAS-free?
Not always. Most claims are the brand's own statement. A third-party program like UL Non-Detectable PFAS adds outside testing. Our picks quote each claim and link to where it's published.
Do the state bans mean all kids' gear is PFAS-free now?
No. The laws cover new products sold in specific states, with different dates. Used items are generally exempt, and some laws cover clothing but not car seats or mattresses. See the state table above.
Are hand-me-downs OK?
Reusing gear is usually the lowest-waste option. When water stops beading on a rain jacket, re-proof it with a fluorine-free wash-in or spray-on DWR. Never use a secondhand car seat with an unknown history.
How were these products chosen?
We only listed products where the brand's own product page or the brand's own listing says the product is made without PFAS, and we checked each claim in November 2026. We don't accept paid placements.
